Road Trip

We're packin' up the car and getting ready to hit the road! We're heading to Ontario for 5 shows and we're takin' our little munchkin as well so it should lots of fun!
Our first show is May 20 at the Purple Hill Country Hall in Thorndale, ON and we'll be joined by several other artists...Jamie Warren, Sean Hogan..just to name a couple.
Then we are heading to Muskoka, ON...hometown of the famous Victoria Banks! In fact we're staying with Vic's aunt in their boathouse while we're there..it is so beautiful! We have a show with Vic at The Gravenhurst Opera House on May 24th so we have a couple days to enjoy the lake..cool!
Then from Muskoka we will head to Toronto, ON to be a part of Tin Pan North for 2 nights. We'll be joined by several other Canadian writers for in-the-round performances.
Our last show is a house concert in Ottawa on May 27th where we will visit with my brother and his family and Ivy will get to play with her cousins for a day or two.
It's gonna be a jam-packed trip...never a dull moment traveling with a 2 1/2 year old! It's only what...900 miles to Thorndale from Nashville? Piece of cake! I'm sure Ivy will be really quiet for the whole drive and not throw a single tantrum and be a perfect angel........pray for us...Follow us on twitter @thejeffersons and we'll keep you posted on all the exciting moments!

Close Call

So it's getting close to Ivy's bedtime 2 nights ago and the two of us go into her bedroom to start getting ready for bed. I was in her closet looking for PJ's and Ivy was toddling around doing her thing. I turn around to see what she's doing and she's at the door with her hand on the doorknob. Now this is not your usual doorknob as the lock has been turned around to face the outside (it's always been that way...we've just never changed it). And you can probably guess what happens next...IIIIIIIIvvvvvyyyyy!! NNNNOOOOOOOO!!
Too late...she turned the lock and just like that her and I were both locked in her bedroom with no one else at home! But here's the best part..I had just started running her bath! The first thing I think of is the conversation Paul and I had about keeping a screwdriver in her bedroom in case of this very event, but of course we didn't do it...arghh! So I try everything to get the lock open...hangers...pieces of toys. Then I remember that someone is staying with us and she's home so I yell for her but she can't hear me because the bath water is running and it makes a loud sound through the pipes downstairs. So then I consider jumping out the window and I get half way out and decide it's too treacherous. I yell some more for Nicole (our houseguest)...nothing...I try jiggling the lock some more....nope. Then Ivy..who's been oblivious to my panicking comes over to me with her angel doll and I say "Ivy, you need to ask your angel to help us get out". So she goes and sits down and starts talking to her doll saying, "You need to help us angel". Then at that very second Nicole comes knocking at the door, completely unaware that we're stuck, and hears us calling and saves us! She just happened to come to the door for something else!
Luckily, the water in the bath had not overflowed but it was close. Needless to say, taking the locking doorknob off that door is now on Paul'd to-do list.
Thank you Angel doll@

Country Music News - We'll Miss You

I can't believe we are saying goodbye to something that has been such a fixture in Canadian country music for over 30 years. I read a note from Jason Blaine on Facebook and found out that the final issue of Country Music News has been sent out.
Larry Delaney and his wife Joanne have been the driving force behind the publication and have done all of it right from their home in Ottawa...pretty much the last of it's kind. It was all done from scratch...no computers...no internet...no online anything...all done the old fashioned way with a lot of heart and soul. Paul and I had the chance to visit with them in Ottawa the last time we were there and had the chance to look through the vintage music selection that Larry owns. Quite amazing to say the least!
I personally have had the good fortune of being on the cover a few times throughout my career and am so grateful for all the support Larry and Country Music News have given me. And I'm so glad The Jeffersons were able to be included in one of the final issues as well. But onward we go...we won't forget you, Country Music News, but we WILL miss you!

Sometimes the Customer is Not Always Right

I was at a Wendys restaurant the other day treating myself to a cheese burger and fries. I was placing my order when suddenly a guy comes up behind me interupting my order and says to the lady, 'my burger is not right!, there's cheese on it!' So they take his burger back to make it to his liking and the manager explains to the man that all the burgers come with cheese unless you specify otherwise. He then says, 'Well, the customer's always right!'. I couldn't believe this guy! I could tell the poor lady behind the counter was about ready to tell him where he could put his cheese but she didn't and hats off to the manager for being so even keeled about it too. He said 'sometimes you get those people'.
The point is, come on burger guy! Its not that important! He didn't even see me standing there placing my order. Total tunnel vision...
Anyway, let's consider the people that work at these places...they have to put up with a lot of crazy people throughout the day. Next time you're there, offer a kind word to the person taking your order...it might help make up up for the crazy burger guy comin' in later!

Whitney

So sad to learn of the passing of the Whitney Houston this past week. But the saddest part is that such an awesome, God given talent was taken away that really didn't have to be.
And of course, the media has been going to town with it...any picture of Whitney they can find that doesn't show her in her best light ends up in the tabloids...all kinds of rumors about her last few days and what she did or didn't do. I was at the grocery store yesterday and every magazine and gossip column had her on the cover.
I think we should celebrate the lovely soul she was underneath her flaws for now, but in time not forget that she had an illness that stole her talent, her self respect and eventually her life. How do we help others avoid the same path? So many young artists out there are completely out of touch with reality and have no comprehension of what substance abuse can do...we are not invincible! You can only go so far with that kind lifestyle before it catches up with you in some way.
My wish for these times is that maybe this could be a wake-up call for some. Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Elvis, Hank Sr. and the list goes on...we don't need to add anymore.
Rest in peace, Whitney

Full Circle at the Blue Bird

As you may know The Jeffersons are playing at the Bluebird on Feb 15th at 9pm which we've done many times before, but this time there is a little different twist to it. Aside from the amazing guitar guru Porter Howell, we'll be joined by the new Canadian act 'One More Girl'. They are 2 young ladies, Carly and Britt McKillip, that I have had the pleasure of knowing since they were little tykes. Their dad, Tom Mckillip has been the guitar player/band leader of the Lisa Brokop band for over 15 years so the girls were always around backstage or out front watching the show. Little did we know that they would soon be following in the same footsteps and be in Nashville about to be big stars!
They recently signed a new record deal with Interscope Records and are about to bust wide open as the next big thing! They have it all...amazing talent, gorgeous looks and they write their own songs too.
It's so cool to me that these the two little girls have grown up to be such talented young women and are about to embark on the same path I did so many years ago! I can't wait to see where the road will take them and I'm so glad we could get them at The Bluebird before they're too famous!

It's a crazy world we live in now...texting, emailing, tweeting, tablets, etc...We must admit that we haven't been the greatest at keeping up with all the new ways to communicate with people. I guess you could say we're kind of old fashioned and prefer a more traditional way but none-the-less, it's the world we live in and we want to keep up with everybody else and stay in contact with YOU! So, that being said, we're making a new years resolution (we don't usually like to make resolutions) to be more on top of the internet and the ways of the future. We'll be on Twitter more often and FB as well...so watch for us! Hope the year has started out in an awesome way for everybody!

Happy New Year

New Years Eve was a strange one for us this year...2011 came to an end and in it's final moments took away a dear family member. Paul's eldest sister Wendy passed away around 10 pm CST on New Years Eve after a short battle with cancer. Paul will go to San Francisco this week to be with his family so please keep them all in your prayers during this sad time.
It's a tough way to start out a new year but yet it is a reminder that life is short and we must make the most of what we have now. We want to live 2012 to the fullest! Perhaps in honor of Wendy. We don't like the whole 'resolution' thing so much but prefer to set goals instead. We've got some irons in the fire for the year that we can fill you in on as they develop but it looks like we will be BUSY! Some touring plans, writing, recording and who knows what else!
Plus..our little Ivy will most likely keep us running at all times!Anyway, we wish all of you much happiness and good health for 2012!Love,The Jeffersons

Doesn't look like we'll be getting a white Christmas this year in Nashville...last year was a rarity for sure!
The holidays have snuck up on us again and made us wonder where the year went...it's crazy how fast it goes! We thought time went fast before having a child...now it moves at lightning speed! We're spending the holidays this year at home in Nashville...just the 3 of us...and it has been nice to have a little down time this week.
It's been an awesome year for The Jeffersons and we are grateful for all of the opportunities presented to us this year and for the new friends and fans we've made throughout our travels. We hope everyone finds a few quiet moments over the next week or so to relax and reflect on the past year and we wish you all the happiest of holidays and for peace, love and health in 2012!Merry Christmas! The Jeffersons

Christmas Tour Fun

We've had a really great time on the road this past week and a half! We had 6 shows total...3 in California and 3 in BC and all were a ton of funl. We made a lot of new fans and enjoyed performing songs from our Christmas EP. Christmas is always such a great time to be on the road! Everybody is in the holiday spirit! Next year, we hope to make it an even bigger tour...more Christmas songs, more cities, more people!
Today we are in Surrey with The Brokops and will be having a Christmas dinner since we won't be here for the actual day. Tomorrow we head back to Nashville...long flight with a 2 year old...pray for us! We'll be having a quiet Christmas in Nashville, just the 3 of us...
Don't get too caught up in the holiday hustle and bustle over the next couple weeks...enjoy the special moments!

The Jeffersons have some cool projects on the go right now! The first one is our Christmas EP - very exciting! It's almost ready for release and it will include 6 of our favorite Christmas songs. We will be releasing 'Baby It's Cold Outside' in the next few weeks to our friends at radio so listen for it...it's a classic song that you may remember from the movie "Elf", but we fell in love with the song listening to the Ray Charles/Betty Carter version. Now there will be a Jeffersons version!
The second project we're working on is with our friends at Take8 Films. We're putting together a five song acoustic performance video that will be like a mini concert that people will be able get from our website and when we're out touring. So far it's about half done and we're getting some really great footage. We'll let you know when we get closer to finishing...

LB at the Bluebird

It looks like I will be joining in with some friends at The Bluebird on Nov. 3rd at 6:00. It's going to be Jim Reilly, Victoria Banks, Dave Petrelli and myself. I will be breaking away from my duo partner for a night but you never know...he may appear out of the shadows for a song or two. I've known Jim for many years and am looking forward to hearing him sing again. He was a co-writer on my song 'Lime Green Pacer' from a couple of records ago. Should be another night of prolific brilliance at the Bluebird!

Vicki's Gettin' Married

My good friend Victoria Banks is getting married in just a few days in Connecticut and I get to be a bridesmaid! I leave on Saturday with the other girls...could be some crazy times ahead! Paul will be Mr. Mom for the weekend while I'm off on my get-a-way..that should be good for a few interesting blogs...ha!
Vic is putting us to work as well. We're all going to sing together in a choir with some of her family members for a song that she's chosen and three of us will also be singing 'I Hope You Dance' for the father/daughter dance. Somebody bring the tissues....
It should prove to be quite an event! Apparently there is a softball game on Sunday that the wedding party is required to take part in...hmmm...more on that later...

We are planning to be in California in early December to do a house concert tour and we would like to make the most of our trip so if you think you would like to have The Jeffersons at your home let us know and we will try to include you on the tour. We are finishing up a Christmas CD and will be including some of those songs in the show. How festive! It's going to be really fun! I know it's early to be thinking about Christmas...but we must plan ahead! Our Christmas CD will be available online as well.

Alberta Weekend

Just got back from 2 shows in Camrose and Calgary, AB. We played at The Bailey Theatre in Camrose which was built in 1910...it was the coolest old place! They used to have vaudeville performances and cabaret shows and they still had an original piece of the wall downstairs in the dressing room. If that wall could talk! They've renovated a good part of the building but it still has the vibe of back then...probably some ghosts floating around there somewhere too! Our show in Calgary was a co-bill with Catherine Maclellan and she was really great! She's a singer/songwriter from PEI. Her dad wrote the song Snowbird (Anne Murray) and she did her version of it..quite different from the hit version..very cool. We're back in Nashville for awhile now..

Tracey

I'm sad to report that we had to say goodbye to our beloved dog Tracey yesterday. She was 14 years old and her time had come to leave us. Tracey arrived on Paul's doorstep 14 years ago (the mailman found her and brought her) as a tiny puppy. Paul was not particularly fond of the idea of having a dog at the time but soon enough this little ball of fur stole his heart and she's been his faithful companion ever since. She was a beautiful Norwegian Elkhound, quite a big dog, so the fact that she was with us for 14 years is really remarkable! We take comfort in the fact that she lived a great long life, and know that she is probably somewhere running like a puppy again in the place where our special pets go when they're too tired to be with us humans. We will miss her....

End of the Road

I've been meaning to blog sooner than this but it's been crazy busy out here! So this will be a big blog...
Kelowna - awesome show there! My cousin Tina and her husband Brian hosted the event and we had 70 people! They have the most beautiful home overlooking Okanagan Lake and you'd think 70 people would be crowded in a house but it really wasn't...almost like it was meant for house concerts! By the way, we're thinking about planning a Christmas house concert tour...can you imagine it...Christmas trees and decorations...hot chocolate...carols....can't wait! We played at the Ivan Daines 35th annual 'Picknic' on the 19th to a great crowd. It sure gets cold in Alberta at night! We froze our buns off! Paul forgot his jacket too so Ivan loaned him his...and then ended up giving it to him! Thanks Ivan... Our final show of the tour was at Watcom Meadows, just south of the Canadian/US border and was the perfect end to the trip. Whatcom Meadows is a campground with lots that people own. My aunt and uncle have owned there for 25 years and the whole family has been going down every year. So we thought maybe it would be fun to do a little show, house concert style, maybe get 30 or 40 people together....and there ended up being over 200! It was awesome! The weather was beautiful..the people were incredible...and it was a perfect end to our tour!
We stayed an extra couple days to camp with Ivy and then it's home to Nashville!

In Canada On My Birthday

It was my birthday yesterday...again. Yes, they keep coming but it's better than the alternative. I read a great quote some years ago - "As long as one has their health (and that's a big if) older is always better than younger." The statement does not eliminate anyone because no one is getting younger. Anyway I spent my birthday driving through the Canadian Rockies, some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen. We saw deer and a moose which is always fun for the kid. I was jealous of the people I saw biking, hiking and camping but we needed to keep moving on to the next gig here in Kelowna, British Columbia which is looking like it's going to be a great show. Back to birthdays, why do we celebrate just the day? Why not celebrate the birth-hour? Or better yet the birth-month? I'm happily spending my entire birth-month doing what I love with people I love in beautiful country.
